Week 8: Reflection

Being the final course in the masters program for integrating technology into the classroom, EDUC 6715 was designed to help teachers look into the future of teaching, explore new and emerging technologies and become advocates of change. Throughout the progression of the course, I have had exposure to different technologies that when implemented effectively can create an engaging and enriched learning experience for all learners. I have used and seen results from implementing such technologies as video making, podcasting, blogging, digital storytelling and uses of online multimedia presentation of information like images, videos, sound bites, etc. into my classroom. This course has validated these practices as well as shown me other options. I have truly enjoyed learning about online learning environments and digital gaming as ways to implement technology. The use of new and emerging technologies helps prepare students by engaging them in active learning as well as helping to develop 21st century learning skills. These technologies are the wave of the future in teaching.

Another set of skills that this course has also help me develop are my skills in becoming an advocate of change. The change that I speak of is being able to effectively influence technology decision-making and lead technology change in my school. Through my work in this course as well as pervious courses I have developed a strong passion for the integration of technology into the classroom. As Dr. Roland Barth stated, the role of teacher leaders is, “making what you believe in come true” (Laureate Education, Inc., 2009). Although technology is a prominent component of my schools community with interactive whiteboards in almost all classroom, movable laptop carts and document cameras, I feel that there is still resistance in stepping away from traditional resource of information. The change that needs to happen within my building is more on an instructional level. Through my vision and passion I feel that I would be a great resource for other teachers looking to expand their use of technology and model for a lifelong learner.

This coming school year, I am going to continue to implement technologies that were discovered over the course of this class into my classroom. I would like to look into more digital games that would be used in conjunction with classroom activities. I am going to use the website of www.donorschoose.org to help purchase these games for the classroom. I would also like to set up a learning community within the school. Part of the reason why other teachers might be resistant to change is due to lack of knowledge and the time they feel that it takes away from learning. On the contrary, through the use of new and emerging technologies students are asked to complete tasks that are long and difficult that requires learners to utilize 21st century learning skills (Gee, 2005). I could imagine this group meeting during a shared period or casually during lunch to discuss, share and educate others about promising practices that integrate technology, enrich curriculum and most importantly engage students in an active and fun learning experience.
